THE PLASTIC PROBLEM

The Problem of plastic in the environment is becoming well known. As a by-product of fossil fuels it is widely available at low cost with an almost indestructible quality it will last in the environment for up to 1000 years. The combination of low priced, single-use plastics is creating an unprecedented environmental catastrophe especially for our oceans where all waste tends to end up.

‘At least 8 million tons of plastic go to the world’s oceans year after year . The report warns that plastic trash will outweigh the fish by 2050, unless drastic measures are taken’

IN UNITED PLASTIC NATIONS WE BELIEVE IN THE NEED FOR CHANGE.

As a collective of artists, designers and makers we believe that change is essential. For this change to happen we are working together with different collectives and already existing organisations looking for different solutions.

These would be the main measures we considered to tackle the problem:

  1. Drastic reduction of plastic consumption – requires the support of institutions to change current legislation, providing solutions, such as an end to single use plastics and use of environmentally acceptable alternatives.
  2. Create social awareness and calls to action – ensuring more people are aware of the problem and providing solutions for the change of individual, familial and corporate plastic management.
  3. Educate future generations. The future relies on better education and awareness.
  4. Improve the recycling process and visibility. Reports are that plastics are not being recycled effectively or being recycled at all.
  5. Joining in the management of change. the participation in and creation of alliances by Mayors, Councillors, Ministers, Associations, Artists and different organisations in the fight for the eradication of plastic is essential. TOGETHER we can build a SUSTAINABLE solution.

The past has been about change measures should come from institutions but we at UNITED PLASTIC NATIONS believe that we ALL need to participate to bring about change.

At UPN we want to be an active part of the change and contribute to the implementation of the 5 measures described above.

For this reason we have contemplated creating our own recycling units and around these the creation of an entire service with educational kits and collateral actions like call to action events, awareness artwork, workshops and art installations.

COLLATERAL ACTIONS

As part of our collateral actions we will create a call to action and awareness campaigns to encourage communities to join the global movement.

One of the campaigns is the introduction of posters to encourage people to collect plastics from their environment, where they are encouraged to collaborate in the maintenance of beaches and river banks.

We are currently starting actions in supermarkets to make visible the unnecessary plastic used.

We will also create information KITS to encourage change in consumer habits, which schools and universities can download. We will also create a platform where students and supporters of the cause can share their findings, publish their creations and create a complete community of changes.

An important collateral action will be our installations of artists in galleries and festivals. We believe in art as a generator of change and in the need for Social Responsibility in the art world. We believe that designers and artists should participate in the management of social change.

One of our first interventions was an interactive installation that invited us to produce ARTERIA BCN, where we proposed to the public to draw on a television, furniture and floor. With this installation we wanted to make a call to the need to feed our conscious and questioning state. ‘When our mind draws we become fully conscious.’

The 12th may we will be in ART LOVER GROUND with an awareness art installation.

VISION

Our mobile recycling units and collateral action are just the beginning of a great mission.

Our intention is to create larger recycling units for the creation of structures and propose their implementation in conscious cities with the need for change (GREEN CITIES). These structures could be destined to the construction of tiny houses, with the aim of offering an alternative housing solution or the construction in institutions of structural elements that they may need  for urban furniture in parks, awareness stands, etc).

A major objective is the introduction of a recycling unit in a navigable format in rivers and of greater scope to act directly on the sea. Our intention is to eradicate as much plastic as possible and to minimize the plastic islands that float in our oceans.

It is a long journey for which we will need help from institutions, companies and individuals. We have set goals in the short, medium and long term that we will achieve thanks to the collaboration of all.

UNITED, we will achieve it.
